BI & Data Warehousing

Our introduction to data warehousing was in 1995 during the early data warehousing hype. Data warehousing is now a mature IT discipline with industry wide recognized best practice and pitfalls.
More recently, the industry has evolved from data warehousing (DW) into Business Intelligence (BI). Business Intelligence envelops the business methodologies and analytical processes required to support corporate decision making as well as the IT environment which delivers information to these analytical processes i.e. the data warehouse.
A primary point of focus in Business Intelligence is the business drivers. Increased market share, cost reduction and risk mitigation are drivers for which strategic and tactical planning depend on Business Intelligence. Having determined what analytical processes can support these planning activities, business users can issue requests to the data warehouse in terms of

• What information is required?
• How frequently it is used,
• From which operational systems it is sourced,
• Data quality indicators and cleansing required.
